TUM is setting up an Endowed Chair for the Acoustics of Mobile Systems. Research will focus on the origin and diffusion of sound and the findings will be used to develop more efficient sound proofing measures. The Chair will be funded by the Zeidler-Forschungs-Stiftung foundation over a period of five years. In large industrialized countries, rising urbanization, traffic volume and development density mean that noise levels are constantly rising. As such, research into the origin and propagation of sound offers huge social and economic potential as a catalyst for developing efficient sound proofing measures for mobile and other technical systems.

Sponsor: BMW Group
Funding period: 2012-2017
The BMW Group is funding the Endowed Chair for Systemic Vehicle Efficiency over a period of five years. The intention of the automobile manufacturer is to strengthen research and teaching in this cross-cutting strand of automotive engineering. In a time of increasing urbanization and dwindling resources, the need for sustainable mobility options and efficiency-enabling technologies is rising. Now, automotive engineering students will be able to explore answers to these global challenges.
Sponsor: Infineon Technologies AG
Funding period: 2012-2017
The Chair for Power Electronics endowed by Infineon Technologies AG will bring together research on power engineering, microelectronics and semiconductor technology. The objective is to strengthen research and training focused on various facets of energy efficiency for example, power generation, energy conversion and energy transmission. The chair will focus on electronic components and their systematic interaction. Researchers hope to enable or improve electrical energy and power conversion in pioneering applications. This could lead to new developments in renewable energy and electromobility.

The weather tower is 52 meters high and provides meteorological data like the temperature, humidity, wind direction and wind velocity. Recording this information is stipulated in the provisions of the operator's licence for the neutron source. The design for the tower was drawn up by the Munich-based architectural team of Deubzer, König + Rimmel. They designed a semi-transparent façade through which the contours of the supporting structure are visible. The transparent membrane consists of Plexiglas sheets, donated by Evonik Industries AG/Röhm, which are 25 millimeters thick, up to 6.30 meters in length and guaranteed weather and UV resistant for up to 30 years.

New sources of energy, a different climate and changes in users' expectations will determine our future – and the construction engineers who are building tomorrow's world have to take these aspects into account today. In order to promote the university education of construction engineers and architects and support basic research into sustainable building, TUM is setting up an endowed chair, which is being sponsored by the Association for Construction Research and Professional Education of the Bavarian Construction Industry Union (Verein für Bauforschung und Berufsbildung des Bayerischen Bauindustrieverbands). The aim is for future construction engineers to identify and investigate the connections between classical construction methods and energy. One vital goal is sustainability in the planning, in construction, in the operation and recycling. In particular, the endowed chair, which occupies an interdisciplinary position bridging the Departments of Construction Engineering and Architecture, will focus on integrating energy-oriented building and planning into the relevant courses.
Sponsor: Eurocopter Deutschland GmbH
Funding period: 2008-2016
Eurocopter, a worldwide operating manufacturer of helicopters and an affiliate of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), is the main sponsor for an endowed chair for helicopter technology on campus Garching near Munich. This new chair, which is initially planned for 8 years, allows the TUM to expand its existing main research field of space technology. With the creation of the endowed chair, the university helps to qualify young engineers and strengthen the research on helicopter technology within Germany instead of following the international markets.

Funding period: 2007-2015
The SGL Group – The Carbon Company – today arranged with the Technical University of Munich to establish a chair for carbon fibers and carbon fiber composites. Working in close cooperation with the faculty chairs for mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics and IT, the "SGL Group Chair for Carbon Composites" will be dedicated to the comprehensive analysis of carbon fiber-based materials and their processing as well as construction and calculation procedures. This is intended to generate a deeper understanding of the entire value chain from raw material through carbon fibers and the textile product as well as material through to the finished component. As a result, the Garching research site in Munich will also benefit from a research focus on "Carbon Composites" and a "Center for Carbon Composites" (CfCC)

Sponsor: E.ON Kernkraft GmbH
Funding period: 2007-2012
E.ON Energie is sponsoring the development of the Chair of Nuclear Technology at TU München, which will now combine teaching in the fields of Reactor Physics, Reactor Regulation, Reactor Safety Systems and System Technology. As an energy services company in which nuclear energy plays a significant role, E.ON Energie regards the promotion of research and teaching as a special social responsibility. Irrespective of political decisions, the aim is to maintain the safety of nuclear plants at the highest level and not to lag behind international standards of research and technology.

The "Landscape Architecture and Landscape Planning" field of research at Weihenstephan Science Center has been modernized. At the nucleus of the makeover is the Department for Strategy and Management of Landscape Development. It was thanks to the generous support of the Allianz Umweltstiftung environmental foundation that TU München was able to buy all the equipment required for the new department. The responsibilities of the new department include environmental planning from the specific point of view of strategic and management-oriented planning techniques. The department backs up the choice of courses in "Landscape Architecture and Landscape Planning" and "Land Management and Land Tenure."

TU München is the only research and teaching institution in Bavaria that offers Civil Engineering and Geodesy. Apart from this faculty's immediate importance on an educational level, the departments and government regulators help to develop and test new construction techniques and standards in the building industry. This faculty's performance not only has to measure up to the requirements of the building trade and the building authorities but also to the basic methodological approaches that are developed for the specialist area itself and for adjacent areas. In was in this context that TU München's university governing board set up the Departments for Building Chemistry, Building Physics, Building Technology and Housing, among others. By appointing a professor to the department at the beginning of the winter semester 2004, it was possible to make up for the shortfalls in the field of Building Process Management.
