Sustainability and society
We understand sustainability to mean not only the responsible use of natural resources, but also the direct treatment of people. In doing so, we set greater levers in motion through targeted promotion - for the benefit of society.
Environmental issues, new forms of energy, sustainable agriculture, the impact of technology on society, sustainable urban development, energy self-sufficient buildings, social change through technological progress, water and forest management, etc. The field of sustainability and society is broad.

Werner Siemens Chair of Synthetic Biotechnology / Prof. Brück
Algae bind the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide when building up biomass. But they can do much more. Algae can accumulate valuable trace elements from the water, they can produce plant oil or valuable chemical intermediates, and they are ten times faster than land plants at building up biomass. Scientists estimate that there are more than 150,000 species of algae. Only a few of these have been studied in detail to date. At the Werner Siemens Chair of Synthetic Biotechnology, Prof. Thomas Brück is researching what can be done with algae.
Prof. Dr. Thomas Brück received the Sustainability Award in 2019 "in recognition of his outstanding research work and biotechnological innovations for the economically interesting and climate-friendly conversion of atmospheric carbon dioxide and residual biomass streams into high-quality active ingredients and materials".
